Suiyuan province (in simplified Chinese 绥远省)was one of the four Saibei Provinces during the Republic of China Period, together with the Rehe Province, Chahar Province and Ningxia Province. The short form for this province is “Sui”. The provincial capital of Suiyuan was called Gui Sui, which is now called the Hohhot. This province is located in the middle part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The total area of this province is 329397.19 square kilometers, and the territory of this province was mainly made up of plateau as the main body. It can also be divided into three parts. The first part is the part of the northern Mongolian Plateau. The main feature of this part is surely the Gobi Desert, which is very well-known. In fact, this area is very rich in mineral resources, and the well-known Bayan Obo town of Minerals is also located here.

The middle part of this province is connected through the Yellow River, and it results in the formation of the Loop area. There are the front and the back loops in this region and there are a lot of people living in this region. Actually, as it is near to the river, most people would choose to live here because they could reach water sources easily when they need to wash clothes, boil drinking water, cooking, etc.

Lastly, the southern part of the Province was mainly composed of the Ordos Plateau and there, you would be able to find the tomb of Genghis Khan, who founded the Yuen Dynasty.

In fact, during the Qing Dynasty, this piece of land was part of the Mongolia. Since the general stationing here is called Suiyuan, people call this area as Suiyuan. In modern China, leaders decided to rename this area as a Province and therefore, it became the Suiyuan Province. During the Sino-Japanese War, this Province was attacked and conquered. However, the armed forces and also the citizens in this province strived to fight against the Japanese soldiers. Finally, after the war ended, they regained their land.
