Basic Facts about Shaanxi Province

Shaanxi Province (in simplified Chinese陕西省) or Shaan for short, is a province of China located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The provincial capital of Shaanxi Province is located at Xi’an.

In fact, the origin of the names of Shaanxi, is actually related to the relevant historical changes. Nowadays, in a town in southwest Henan Province, there is a place called Shaan Yuen. During the Zhou Dynasty, this Shaan Yuen was used as a division line. According to some historical document, it was said that “Starting from the Shaan eastward, the land would be for Zhou Noble, and for those located west of the Shaan, it would be long to Shaw Noble.” During the Song Dynasty, the Shaanxi area was announced to be “Road”, which is equivalent to Province nowadays.

In accordance with the Pinyin translation, if written, Shaanxi (shǎnxī) has a different tune with a homonym of the neighboring provinces Shanxi (shānxī) and so this name would usually make foreigners confused. Therefore, the government decided to add a “a” for Shaanxi so that there would be a better distinction.

In late 2005, the resident population of Shaanxi Province was 37,200,000 people. The birth rate was 10.02 ‰, and the mortality rate was 6.01 ‰. On the other hand, the natural growth rate of this province was 4.01 ‰. All these show that the province is growing quite stably and healthily.
